The Install, Step By Step

How does garage door installation work?

A garage door installation runs in a set order. The opening is measured first. Then the old door comes down, with its springs released safely. The new tracks, springs and door go up next, and the opener goes on last, with its limits set and the safety reverse tested before the job's finished.

Each step of a garage door install

Measure up: The width and height of the opening, plus the space above it and beside it. Those numbers decide which doors will fit.
Take the old door down: Its springs are still under tension, so they're released before anything else is unbolted. This is the riskiest part of the job.
Fit the new door: The tracks or brackets go up, then the door, then the springs are set so they carry the door's weight.
Set up the opener: The motor goes on, the open and close limits are set, the remotes are paired and the safety reverse is tested.
Hand over: You should be shown how the manual release works, and get the warranty papers for the door and the opener.

Replacing an old garage door

A replacement adds the removal step, and sometimes a bit of work on the opening. Old timber jambs can be rotten or out of square, and an older opener may not suit a heavier new door. Ask what's included before the day, so taking the old door away and any opener change aren't a surprise.

How long an install takes

It depends on the door, the opening and whether the opener goes on the same day. A straight swap of a similar door is quicker than a job that needs changes to the opening. If there's no power point near where the opener goes, a licensed electrician has to put one in first.

Most noisy or heavy doors need a repair or a service rather than a new door. Springs, cables, rollers and openers can all be replaced on their own. A new door makes sense when the panels or the curtain are badly damaged or rusted through, or parts for it can't be found any more.

Roller, sectional and tilt doors each need different room around the opening. A roller door rolls up around a drum above the opening. A sectional door runs back along tracks under the ceiling. A tilt door swings up and out in one piece. Your measurements decide what fits.

Why the springs matter more than the motor

The springs carry the door's weight. The motor only moves it. Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door and wind up to lift it. Extension springs run beside the tracks and stretch as the door closes. Both are under high tension the whole time, so fitting or adjusting them is a technician's job.

Springs wear by use. Most torsion springs are rated for around 10,000 open-and-close cycles, roughly seven to ten years in a home that uses the door three or four times a day. A busier door gets there sooner.

Check the opener and its safety features

The opener should stop and reverse when the door touches something on the way down. Test it with a roll of paper towel laid flat under the door. Many openers also have safety sensors near the floor that stop the door if something crosses the beam. Ask which opener is fitted and where its manual release is.

If there's no power point near the opener, a licensed electrician has to install one before the opener goes on.
