Garage Door Motor and Opener Replacement on the Sunshine Coast

Fix it when the rest of the opener is sound and one part has failed, like a logic board or a stripped gear. Replace it when parts aren't made any more, or years of pulling a heavy door have worn it out. Either way, Thom checks the springs and balance first, because a new motor on a badly balanced door won't last.

Slow or jerky travel is often the first sign. Then the door starts stopping part way or ignoring the remote now and then. You might hear grinding or clicking from the motor head, or see the light flicker while the motor strains.

Some of these are the opener and some are the door. A door with a tired spring or a sticky roller makes any motor work harder, and the motor gets the blame. Thom finds the real cause rather than swapping parts and hoping. If the door won't reverse when it touches something, stop using the opener until it's checked.

A motor only guides the door. The springs do the lifting. When a spring weakens, the door gets heavier and the opener strains and slows down. Put a new motor on that door and it'll wear out early too.

So before Thom recommends a new opener, he takes the opener out of the picture and checks the door by hand. A balanced door lifts smoothly and stays put about half way. If it doesn't, the springs need attention first, and that's the fix that makes any opener last longer.

An opener has to suit the weight and size of the door. Too small and it works flat out and fails early. Roller doors and sectional doors also take different kinds of openers, so the door type matters as much as the size. If the rail and brackets are sound, a new motor head can often go onto the existing setup.

Thom sizes the new motor to your door, then sets the travel limits so the door stops in the right place at the top and bottom. He sets the force and tests the safety reversal, so the door stops and backs off if it touches something.

Most manual roller doors can take a motor. It mounts beside the drum at the top of the opening and drives the door up and down, so there's no ceiling rail. Sectional doors can be automated too, with a motor on a rail across the ceiling.

Before a motor goes on, the door has to run freely and be well balanced by hand. A roller door that's heavy to lift needs its spring tension sorted first, or the motor struggles from day one. You'll also need a power point near the motor, fitted by a licensed electrician if there isn't one. Thom can check your door and tell you what needs doing first.

Old remotes often won't work with a new motor, and most new openers come with their own. If a remote stops working on an opener that's otherwise fine, try a new battery first, then check nothing is blocking the signal.
