Why Is My Garage Door Opener Beeping? Beeps, Flashes and What to Do

A beeping garage door opener is usually telling you one of four things: it's running on its backup battery, that battery is low, a service is due, or the door has hit something. The pattern of beeps and flashes tells you which. After a Sunshine Coast storm cuts the power, start with the battery. A stalled door means call.

Question 01

Why is my garage door opener beeping?

First, make sure it's the opener. Chamberlain, the company behind Merlin openers, points out that a smoke alarm, a carbon monoxide alarm or another gadget with a low battery can beep nearby. If it is the opener, count the beeps and flashes, and note when they happen. Then match what you've got to the table below.

Every brand has its own code. The table comes from the makers' own manuals and support pages: Chamberlain, B&D, Steel-Line and Merlin. Models differ, so the manual for the opener on your ceiling has the final say.

Write the pattern down before you ring. If you book a callout, telling Thom the beeps, the flashes and the brand on the opener helps him plan the visit.

Question 02

Why does my garage door beep every time it opens?

Often, it's a service reminder. Some Steel-Line openers count every open and close. Once they reach the set number, they beep eight times each time the door opens. B&D says the most common reason an opener beeps or flashes is that it's due for scheduled maintenance. It doesn't mean anything has broken. It's a nudge to book a service.

Steel-Line's service reminder sheet for its SD800 and SD1200 sectional openers sets the reminder at 2,500 cycles out of the box. One open and one close counts as one cycle. The RD1200 roller door opener is set at 1,500 cycles, and it flashes as well as beeps. Both say the door and opener should get a professional service at least every 12 months, or at that cycle count.

B&D does it with the light. On its Smart Pro, Smart and Secure openers, the main light flashes six times after the door runs, and the beeper sounds when the alert first starts. The B&D installation manual says that means maintenance is due after a pre-set number of cycles.

Open and close the door about four times a day and you'll reach 1,500 cycles in around a year. Busy houses get there sooner. A garage door service checks the door and the opener, and once it's done, the reminder can be reset.

Question 03

Why is my garage door beeping after a power cut?

If your opener has a backup battery, it's telling you it's running on that battery. Chamberlain says a beep every 2 seconds means the opener is under battery power. Merlin's 24V backup gives the same beep while the door moves. That's normal in a blackout. Once the mains power comes back, the battery starts charging again.

B&D openers show it with the light. The Smart Pro, Smart and Secure manual says the main light flashes three times as the door starts and ten times at the end when the opener is on its backup battery.

How long a backup lasts depends on the system. B&D says its battery backup usually gives two to four full cycles, where one lift and lower is a cycle. Merlin's 24V backup manual says a full charge runs its opener for one to two days of normal use. With that Merlin unit, the opener's own light stays off while it's on battery, so don't expect it to light up the garage.

Power still out and the battery's flat? You'll need the manual release. How to open a garage door manually in a power outage walks through it, and how to lock the door again after.

Question 04

Why is my garage door beeping every 30 seconds?

A beep every 30 seconds usually means the backup battery is low or dead. Chamberlain says a flashing orange light with that beep means low, and a solid red light means the battery is dead and can't recharge. Merlin's backup uses a flashing yellow light for low. Still beeping with the power back on? The battery may have had it.

Give it time first. Merlin says its batteries recharge within 48 hours once the power's back, and they don't need a full charge to run the opener. While you wait, check the opener is plugged in and switched on at the wall, and that nothing's tripped at the switchboard.

These batteries wear out. Merlin's manual puts its backup batteries at 3 to 5 years under normal use. If a red light stays on after the power returns and the 30-second beep keeps going, Merlin says to call for service. On B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure openers, seven flashes means the backup battery is faulty.

Question 05

Why does my opener beep and flash when the door hits something?

That's the safety system working. Chamberlain says on some of its openers, if the door hits something it stops, or reverses if it was closing. Then the opener beeps and the lights flash five times. On B&D's Smart Pro, Smart and Secure openers, eight flashes means the door hit something, and two flashes means the safety beams are stopping it.

Steel-Line's RD1200 roller door opener beeps three times and won't run when there's a safety beam error or a bad connection. B&D also flags a low battery in its wireless safety beams with four flashes, and its fix is to change that battery.

Clear the doorway, wipe both beam lenses with a soft dry cloth and try again. If it keeps stopping with nothing in the way, the safety beams and auto-reverse guide covers the next checks and the monthly safety test.

Question 06

What if the opener beeps and the door won't move?

Stop pressing the button. B&D says nine flashes means the motor has overloaded or stalled, and to call for a service. Its manual checks the door first. A jammed door, or one with a broken spring, can be too heavy for the opener to lift. Running it again only adds strain, so leave the door where it is and call.

For a snapped spring, Thom does spring repairs across the Sunshine Coast. If the car's stuck inside or the door won't shut for the night, call him about a 24/7 emergency callout.

Question 07

What can I safely check myself?

Quite a bit, as long as you leave the springs and cables alone. Make sure it's the opener that's beeping, check the power, clear the doorway and count the pattern. Then look it up. The B&D and Steel-Line manuals both have a troubleshooting section, and B&D's lists each flash pattern with a fix.

  1. Make sure it's the opener. Stand under it while it beeps. A smoke alarm in the garage or hallway chirps when its battery's low, too.
  2. Check the power. Is the opener plugged in and switched on at the wall? Look for a tripped safety switch at the switchboard, and test the power point with a lamp. A dead power point is a job for an electrician.
  3. Clear the doorway and wipe the beams. A wheelie bin or a bike left in the doorway can break the beam.
  4. Count the beeps and flashes. Note whether it happens as the door opens, while it's moving, or on its own every 30 seconds.
  5. Find your model. B&D puts the model number on the back of the opener. Check the troubleshooting table in the manual for that model.
  6. Swap the easy batteries. If the manual points to a low battery in a wireless safety beam, change it the way the manual shows.
  7. Give the backup battery time. After a blackout, let it recharge before you decide it's dead.

Leave these to a technician:

  • Springs, cables and drums. They hold a lot of stored energy.
  • The opener's force and limit settings.
  • Anything under the opener's cover.
  • A door that's crooked, jammed or hanging out of its track.

Question 08

When does a beeping opener need a technician?

Call when the beeping points to a fault or a service that's due. That covers a service reminder, a backup battery that won't charge once the power's back, a motor that has stalled, and a door that keeps stopping with nothing in the way. Call straight away if you heard a bang or the door is crooked.

Thom does garage door repairs and servicing across the Sunshine Coast from his base in Maroochydore. If the opener itself has failed and a repair won't bring it back, that's a garage door motor replacement. The motor replacement cost guide helps you weigh up repair against replace.

Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300 depending on the door size and the labour involved. Call Thom on 0402 882 653 or book a callout. He works 6am to 6pm, seven days, and takes 24/7 emergency callouts.

Summer storms can knock the power out, and that's when battery backups start beeping. A long blackout can run a backup flat, so give it time to recharge once the power's back before you decide it's dead. If you pulled the release cord during the outage, hook the opener back up as well. A busy household runs the door a lot, so a cycle-count reminder can come round well inside a year. Thom covers homes from Mountain Creek to Kuluin and right across the coast.

Quick answers

More questions people ask

If it beeps eight times every time the door opens, it's the service reminder. Steel-Line's SD800 and SD1200 sectional openers are set to start it at 2,500 cycles, and its RD1200 roller door opener at 1,500. One open and close is one cycle. Steel-Line says the reminder means a professional service is recommended. Book a garage door service. The reminder can be reset once it's done.

It usually means the backup battery is low. Chamberlain and Merlin both use a beep every 30 seconds with a flashing light for a low battery. A solid red light with the same beep means the battery is dead or has a fault. Check the power's on at the wall and give it time to recharge. If it's still beeping, call 0402 882 653 or book a callout.

It depends on the system. In a blackout, B&D says its battery backup usually gives two to four full cycles, while Merlin says a fully charged 24V backup runs its opener for one to two days of normal use. Merlin also says its backup batteries last 3 to 5 years under normal use. A battery that no longer holds a charge keeps beeping. If that's still happening once the power's back, call Thom on 0402 882 653 or book a garage door repairs callout.

Usually the beep is only a warning, so what matters is the reason behind it. A low backup battery or a service reminder isn't urgent, but don't ignore it. A door that stops, reverses for no reason, or won't move while the motor strains needs a technician. A bang or a crooked door means stop using it straight away. If you think a spring has gone, read what to do about a broken spring.

On some openers, yes. Steel-Line's reminder sheet shows how to reset the counter. The beeps are there because the door and opener are due for a service, though, and Steel-Line says that should happen at least every 12 months or at the cycle count. It also warns that skipping maintenance may void the warranty. Resetting it without a service only buys you quiet. Thom services doors in Kuluin, Mountain Creek and right across the coast.

Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300 depending on the door size and the labour involved. What the fix involves depends on why it's beeping. The garage door service and repair costs guide explains what the callout covers. Call 0402 882 653 or book a callout.

It's probably the timer-to-close feature. Chamberlain says its openers with this feature beep for eight seconds before the door starts closing, and keep beeping until it's fully shut. If nobody set a timer and the door keeps closing on its own, stop using it and book a garage door repair. The won't open or close guide covers doors that move by themselves.
