Where you live matters too. Salt air near the beach and dust on acreage both wear moving parts faster, so those doors are worth keeping on schedule. A new door needs its first service within its first year, because springs settle and fixings loosen as it beds in.

Sweep out the bottom of the tracks and the floor where the door lands. Sand and leaves roll into the tracks and make the rollers work harder, which wears them faster. Near the beach it's mostly sand. Up in the hinterland it's leaf litter. A quick sweep every few weeks keeps it under control.
Put the remote somewhere out of reach while you sweep, so nobody closes the door on you.
Near the surf, salt settles on the door and its fixings every day. Left there, it turns to rust on the springs and cables. Washing the door down with fresh water now and then slows that down. Check your door's warranty too, because many ask for regular washing in coastal areas. Keep water off the opener.
A balance check tells you if the springs are still doing their job. With the door fully closed, pull the release cord to disconnect the opener. Lift the door by hand to about halfway, then carefully let go. A balanced door stays put. If it drops or rises on its own, book a service.
Keep your feet clear while you test it, and reconnect the opener when you're done. Never pull the release cord while the door is open or hanging crooked. A door with a broken spring can drop fast.
The safety reverse stops the door closing on a car or a person. To test it, lay a roll of paper towel flat under the door and close it with the remote. The door should stop and go back up as soon as it touches the roll. If it doesn't, stop using the opener and call Thom.
Many openers also have safety sensors near the floor on each side of the door. Keep the lenses clean, and keep bins and bikes out of the beam.
Book a repair instead of a service when something has already failed. That means a spring with a gap in it, a frayed or loose cable, a door hanging crooked or off its track, or an opener that hums but won't move the door. Stop using the door until it's fixed.

Garage door springs hold the door's weight under high tension, all the time. If one lets go while you're working on it, it can cause serious injury.
