Garage Door Spring Replacement Cost on the Sunshine Coast: What Sets the Price

On the Sunshine Coast, Deadlock books a spring replacement like any other repair. Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300 depending on the door size and the labour involved. What sets the labour is the door: one spring or two, the spring type, its weight, and any worn cables or drums.

Question 01

How much does a garage door spring replacement cost on the Sunshine Coast?

A spring replacement is booked as a repair callout. Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300 depending on the door size and the labour involved. On a spring job, a pair takes longer than one, and worn cables or drums add work. Ring Thom and ask how it's worked out for your door.

Door maker B&D says spring costs depend on things like door size, spring type and whether you upgrade to high-cycle springs. The table covers what changes the work on your door, and what to tell Thom when you ring, so he knows the job before he arrives.

Question 02

Why are both springs usually replaced together?

On a door with two springs that went in together, both have done the same number of opens and closes. When one snaps, the other carries the same wear and may not be far behind. Replacing the pair keeps the door balanced, and you're not paying for another visit when the old one lets go.

Springs wear out by cycles. One cycle is the door going up and coming back down. Two springs on one door share every cycle, so they tire at the same pace. A busy family home, like plenty around Little Mountain, clocks up cycles fast.

There's a balance reason too. B&D says springs lose tension as they wear, so a new spring and a tired one don't pull the same. It also says that when one spring fails on a two-spring door, the door may open crookedly or look tilted. Matched springs pull evenly, so the door rises straight and the opener isn't fighting one side.

Some doors only run one spring. Then there's nothing to pair, and the question doesn't come up.

If your door has two springs and only one has gone, ask Thom to look at the other one while he's there. He'll tell you what he sees. It's your call.

Question 03

Torsion or extension springs: does the type change the price?

Yes, the type changes the parts and the work. Torsion springs wind tight on a bar above the door. Extension springs stretch along each side, next to the tracks. B&D says extension springs cost less but need more parts, like safety cables. Either way, the new spring has to suit your door's weight.

B&D says extension springs are found on older doors and tilt doors, and that every new door it supplies now runs torsion springs.

You don't need to know your spring type before you ring. Stand back and look up. A thick coil on a bar across the top of the opening is a torsion spring. Long coils running beside the tracks are extension springs. Tell Thom what you see, and leave both alone.

Torsion springs are wound with special winding bars. B&D says tools like these, plus experience, are why spring work isn't a DIY job.

Question 04

Roller doors: re-tension or replace the spring?

A roller door that's gone heavy or won't stay up may only need its spring tension reset, not a new spring. The spring sits inside the drum at the top and loses tension with wear. If it has broken, it needs replacing. Both jobs are technician work, and both are booked as a callout.

Steel-Line says everyday wear can make a roller door fail to stay up, roll up loosely or strain the motor. Its answer is a tension adjustment as part of regular upkeep. Too little tension can stop the door opening and closing properly, it says, and too much puts stress on the door's parts.

Our guide to a heavy roller door and spring tension covers the signs in more detail.

Question 05

What happens on a spring replacement callout?

A spring job follows a set order. The door is made safe, the old spring comes off, and a new one matched to the door's weight goes on. The cables and drums get checked while the door is apart. Then the tension is set so the door balances, and it's tested by hand and with the opener.

Every job is done by Thom. He's got 3.5 years of hands-on work on garage doors behind him, and he's trained across multiple garage door brands, systems and businesses.

Running the opener against a broken spring can strain the motor, cables and tracks, B&D says. So stop pressing the remote, even if the motor still hums.

Question 06

How long does a garage door spring replacement take?

It depends on the door. One spring on a light single door is a shorter job than a pair on a heavy double door with worn cables. A door stuck half open takes longer, because it has to be made safe first. Ring Thom, describe the door, and ask him how long it's likely to take.

Two things help the visit go faster. Tell Thom the door type and how many springs you can see. Then clear boxes and bikes away from the door, so there's room to work on both sides. Never step under a door that's stuck open to do it.

If the door has trapped a car you need today, say so when you ring. Deadlock takes emergency garage door repairs 24/7. Normal hours are 6am to 6pm, seven days, across the Sunshine Coast.

Question 07

Is it worth fixing a garage door spring?

Usually, yes. A spring is a wear part, a bit like the tyres on a car, and it's meant to be replaced during the door's life. If the panels, tracks, rollers and opener are sound, a new spring gets the door lifting properly again. It stops making sense when the door itself is worn out.

Signs the door is the real problem: panels rusted through or badly bent, or a door that's been patched again and again. Our guide to how long garage doors last covers what wears out and when.

Springs rarely fail without warning. A door that feels heavier, lifts unevenly or starts making new noises is worth a look before anything snaps. A regular garage door service checks spring balance and the cables and drums, so wear shows up early. If yours is already gone, book a garage door spring replacement.

On the Sunshine Coast

Salt air is hard on springs. B&D says springs are prone to rust in coastal, humid or wet places, and that rust can make them weaken or fail sooner than expected. Here that means beachside homes in Mooloolaba, Kings Beach, Marcoola or Mudjimba, and our sticky summers don't help. Steel-Line's roller door manual says to wash the door curtain regularly to get the salt off. Busy family homes add wear of another kind, since every trip in and out is one more cycle on the spring. Thom works the Sunshine Coast only, from his base in Maroochydore.

On the Sunshine Coast, Deadlock books it as a repair callout. Repairs and servicing are booked as a callout valued between $200 and $300 depending on the door size and the labour involved. On a spring job, the labour comes down to the door: one spring or two, torsion or extension, how heavy it is, and any worn cables. Call Thom on 0402 882 653 or book a callout.

In most cases, yes. Two springs fitted at the same time have done the same number of cycles, so the one that's still whole carries the same wear as the one that snapped. A new spring beside an old one can also pull the door up unevenly. Ask Thom to look at the second spring when he comes out for your garage door spring replacement.

It depends on the door and what else is worn. One spring on a light single door is quicker than a pair on a heavy double door with frayed cables, and a door stuck half open has to be made safe first. Describe the door when you ring and ask Thom for a rough time. If a car is trapped, ask for an emergency callout.

Yes, if the rest of the door is sound. Springs are wear parts, made to be replaced during a door's life, and a new one gets the door lifting properly again. It stops being worth it when the door itself is failing, with panels rusted through or tracks bent out of shape. Our guide to how long garage doors last covers the signs.

No. Steel-Line's roller door manual says spring work should only be done by qualified door service people, and that the force in a spring is about equal to the door's weight. B&D lists broken bones and cuts among the injuries when spring work is done wrong. Keep clear, stop using the opener, and read what to do when a spring breaks.

A torsion spring winds tight on a bar above the door and unwinds to help lift it. Extension springs sit along both sides, next to the tracks, and stretch as the door comes down. B&D says torsion springs give a smoother ride, while extension springs cost less but need extra parts like safety cables. Either type is technician work, booked as spring repairs.

Often not as long, because salty, damp air rusts them. B&D says springs are prone to rust in coastal, humid or wet places, and that rust can make them fail sooner. Use matters too, since a door opened many times a day wears its springs faster. Homes near the water, like those in Mooloolaba, should read our salt air guide.
